Budapest -- The List

Quick factoids.
-- Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube with the unification on
November 17, 1873, of right-bank (west) Buda and Óbuda (Old Buda) together with Pest on the left bank
-- Ancestral people -> Magyars (mug-Jars)

The adventures of Darkfyre and the goat-boy

Castle Hill -- The old city fort of Buda.

Wednesday, 7/23

Indoor market -- Huge where you can get everything including lace, wood toys, seriously fresh produce
LIVE fish, plus a side of Beef

Gellert Baths -- OMG I love european baths!

Thursday, 7/24

City Park -- Nice big park with lots of open green space and random museums
Plus a replica of a castle
Heroes' Square
Museum of Fine Arts tasty fun! Though we skipped the art hall across the way (It took me until Vienna
to get into full out museum mode, so I had no stamina)
Saint Elizabeth's -- neat little church that was marked WRONG on our map!
Andrassy Utca -- Major throrough fare through the center of town. Think Champs de Elysees
without the eiffel tower

Castle Hill round 2
Hall of Defense -- neat wanderings
The Labyrinth -- series of caves under the hill. About half was actually man made catacombs sans
dead bodies

heard of half these Hungarian artists of display
Synagogue Memorial
House of Hungarian Photographers -- VERY cool contemporary gallery

Saturday, 7/26

Sunday, 7/27

Eger -- Medium sized semi-touristy city East of Budapest

Well here is the first photo dump. These are unedited, cropped or labeled. I'll be refining as I get time but I thought you'd all like to take a look. http://picasaweb.google.com/faeriefyre/Budapest72008

19-20 July 2008 - Budapest solo
In the joy of military life, I got from noon-ish Saturday to noon-ish Monday solo in Budapest. Not what I was planning but, I'm always up for an adventure. So 2 hours of public transit from the airport into the city and then back out to a residential area where I proceeded to wander on foot with more bags than is my usual liking around in circles seeking the Back Pack Budapest I young, fun back packers' hostel. I had never truly experienced the backpacker culture, what an adventure. One that I think will deserve a revisit and for more than 2 nights. So 2 days of late night international musings and aimless wanderings. May the decompress begin.

and slowly easing into real life again and working on beating back the effects of jet lag and 2 weeks of random travel. Oh yea add in a sudden lack of [livejournal.com profile] quixotic_goat. bleh.

So a little sad, very dehydrated, trying to remind my body what vegetables and fiber are, slowly convincing my brain that No it isn't noon its 4 AM. (umm ok more than a little lonely.)

Oh yea and I have 3 weeks til Burning Man. Holy Shit how did that happen?

So things are a little disjointed at the moment. However....

Budapest was BEAUTIFUL. And relaxing and wonderful. We visited a couple smaller towns in Hungary as well before heading to Vienna. Over the next couple days I will start posting a recap and hopefully get pictures up on Flicker quickly. (Question: What is the easiest site for hosting photos that will NOT require registration to view them?)

That's it for now, more to come.

When I left Raleigh yesterday AM I had every intention of working yesterday afternoon. By the time I landed in San Diego 7 hours later the schedule had changed to:
1) stop at BevMo for ginger beer and rum
2) order pizza
3) cue up Underworld
4) nap

A much better plan. Though once again the nap was less than satisfying and sleep later was fitful and inconsistent. I forsee sleep inducing drugs for tonight.

Hopefully today I will get around to a more complete travel report and some dark&twisty introspection.

I think if I exercise more these kamikazi weekend flight will get less painful. Something has to. I took the red-eye out Thursday night, Sucked.:( Too hot too cold couldn't get comfortable and my favorite warm cuddly 'I fill the middle seat because I know you hate it pillow' was missing. It was worse coming back last night. A 1 hour delay out of Atlanta and a middle seat for 1.5 of the trip didn't help. Got home after 1AM, fed cats, fell asleep reading. Some ups today though. Cute new outfit, (chunky black heels, black trenchcoat looking shirt, knee length silky skirt) and a reprieve from Dog pickup til after work.

I did pick up Gaiman's Anasazi Boys in Atlanta, so I'm now reading it and Kushiel's Justice. (One of these is decidedly more safe for work.) Trying to get some annoying chores done this week. Need to get things into some sense of order before I leave for almost 3 weeks.

Well back to the grind.

I am now in full out plan mode. I have been apparently adopted into Team Trick Concepts and will be spinning fans Saturday night. Hmmm..first performance will be in front of a couple thousand people. That’s a good plan. (I know no one will probably see me, its still intimidating. Oh wait so is this entire adventure. At least it will be excitingly consistent.)

On to practicalities. I am flying into Reno Thursday Morning and find a ride. I know coming in right before the gates close is kinda lame but it’s the best I can do. Flying means some things just can not come with me. Namely a bicycle. Have you ever taken one? How valuable is having one there? Would anyone be willing to haul it in for me if I get it to wherever you are?

Starting to plan out wardrobe/sewing needs and trying to come up with an idea for a relatively small, very portable mini installation for our camp. We have offers for day shelter at at least one theme camp so I can be pretty free with it. Not thrilled with the whole ‘American Dream’ theme so I think I will go with just a dream/nightmare concept.

May the plotting begin!

I am totally exhausted, kind of achy and have no clean clothes, but the weekend I just had was so worth it.

The short version: I took Friday off and went to Fire Drums.

The more interesting version: Part 1 )

Holy Crap it's been a month! Well life just is at the moment. The good and the bad seem to be balancing out. After an uncertain start I am starting to settle into the good habits I want to instill into my life. I walked at lunch yesterday, went to the gym this morning and should have Christmas cards out this weekend. Plan for for how to get what I want out of life is ever developing as is the reality of what I want to get out of life.

Work has been erratic and frustrating and messy recently. It is pretty much the 'bad' that I have been experiencing. There is a lot of very boring important stuff going on. Conflicting and disjointed ever growing list of what needs to be done. I think I might be getting some control this week but that could be a delusion.

At home things are much better. Steve and I are happily enjoying copious amounts of happily newlywed-esque time together. Pretty much storing up the good stuff to last the next 13-15 months. (yep they are already talking about the return date being pushed back.) We are also plotting for his 2 week leave next summer. Sorry kids we will most likely miss OTP because we plan to spend the first two weeks of July in...Budapest! Yes we are headed off to beautiful eastern europe. I'm sure other cities will be involved but the initial stop was declared Budapest. We've never been there and my favorite vampire movie was shot there. Really I see no bad part of this.

Also on the traveling note we will be in NoVA from 12/27-1/1. (yes we love to fly on New Year's Day) We plan for much party, food and visiting assorted friends and associated children/babies. (Yes if you have a baby I want to see. squee) Drop me a note if you have a requested day. Our plans are as yet on made so get dibs in now.

Well back to the trenches. I'll try to write more later.
darkfyre_muse: (veil)
Finally giving up the ghost. I'm sick. Not allergies, not PMS just sick. Does make me feel better for the absurd amount of sleep I got this week. (Though looking back I averaged 8 a night so really that is less a statement of sick an more a suggestion to sleep more in general) This does however give me freedom to pull out the big guns. Dayquil. An almost guilty pleasure of medicated bliss. Although my main weapons should and will be sleep and hydration. Harder than they seem really as I am more likely to nap than get really true deep sleep. And I hate drinking when I'm sick. Although I hate needles, the thought of an IV is almost appealing at the moment.

My left brain has been happily plotting, much to the dismay and lethargic wails of my right brain. Travel. Oh yes I am developing the 3 year plan. As it seems the OTP venture abroad is taking solid root it seems logical to do frolicking abroad in '09 and look to domestic, though possibly equally exotic pursuits for '08. (Add as a good friend pointed out. If it was his partner gone for 12 months, the 2 week vacation together in the middle would be filled with activities excluding most of the outside world no matter how exotic. A definite point against going to Budapest next summer.)

So.

A post, finally. Its one of those things, I keep meaning to do it and never quite get around to it. So the high points (or low ones depending how you look at it) of the last two weeks.

-- Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kaelikat I am now supplied with much frivolous fantasy-ish sci-fi-ish reading for the next month or two. And, in the same box, there is a Nietche staring me down. I should read it. If for no other reason to counteract brain rotting nature of the former.

-- As for work. There is lots of it. And will continue to be for the next 7 months. (More likely 8 though.) Its stimulating but, I need to learn to back of the adreneline. I am also still working 1/2 to 1 hour past my already shcedule overtime. Meaning ot paid. Depending on how you look at it, its either a good or bad habit. We'll see if I can cut back a little and avoid burnout.

Hence why I haven't updated in two weeks. 10 hour days tend to lead to not wanting to do Anything at home. (another reason to keep it to 9)

In more interesting news. I bought my ticket for OTP. I'll hit Raleigh 9AM 7/4. The goat will fly into NOVA the week before then drive down on Tuesday or Wednesday. Thinking of bringing some So Cal wine so let me know if you have a request. :)

Well back to the grind. And thank god for thre day weekends.
darkfyre_muse: (Wraeththu)
So its Thursday and quite fall-ish out. Although a few cool rainy days would be nice, it hasn't been too hot though. Life is going. I've been super productive at home the last 2 weeks. Which is good because I've been totally non-productive at work. Getting stuff done, just not with great amount of enthusiasm. Plus yesterday I found out that the girl at work who I am just starting to get to be friends with is leaving in December. Grrr.... This is probably my penance for being happy to see the other woman go. And she's leaving right after we should be getting busy. Hopefully they will get someone new in quickly or this could get ugly around here.

Other than that not much else is going on. Should have all of our travel arrangements done and tickets bought this weekend. I'm a little bummed that I only have time for family this year and no fun in VA. If only I could use the "But you saw me in July soo.." argument with my mom. But at least I get to see my grandmother which is always nice.

Thank God this was a short week. If my boss knew how not there I have been he would refuse to pay. Heck I would refuse to pay me. But the joy of the cube is that he probably doesn't know. Sigh, maybe I'll go in tomorrow and catch up. (well pretty to think so)

It seems that the combination of being 29 and going to a foreign country have inspired a desire for change. So first off half my head is currently blue. It started a brilliant gorgeous azure color and is now a gentle turquoise color. (faded in a week. :( So as a note if you are looking for lasting color do not use Manic Panic) I forgot how much I like having hair this color, it really is just beautiful. (That my husband finds this incredibly attractive is cool too. Knew I married him for a reason.) And since no one at work, namely the principals as they hire and fire, have expressed a need for me to get rid of it I'm thinking of trying out other colors in streaks.

Next up I need new clothes. Not being a professional for almost a year and working in a field intensive job before that has let to a decided lack of nice looking clothes. Heck at this stage I am running low on Ts that were bought after 1997. (yes I hate shopping) So off to spend some cash and get some nice cool stuff.

And as usual the house needs organized. I seem to have an ongoing struggle with entropy. Things around here seem to stay put for about 2 days and then something happens. Usually I start a new project or need to find something that was put away or filed and I can't remember where. *shrug* So goes the existence of the manic and confused.

So that's the state of the Megan. Be well my friends.
darkfyre_muse: (green)
Not that home is bad, short of being a terrible mess at the moment. There are, however, places that I would much rather be. Ireland seems to top that list but is running neck in neck with OTP.

Two and a half days was way not enough in Ireland. I don' t think spending the whole week there would have been enough.

But a week of galavanting in the British Isles with three of my favorite people was such a treat. I had forgotten what an incredible high travelling is. So a couple stamps in the new passport has inspired much mental planning. I don't know how or when but more traveling is definitely in order.

So a quick synopsis..

6/23-- Arrive in London around 10 ish and stumble around a bit finding a place to sleep.

6/24-26 -- run around London with Jen and Chris catching such amazements as the Tate Modern and Kew gardens

6/27 -- wander about at Stonehenge and Salisbury plain. We didn't have time to see Avebury as well unfortuately. Someday it would be nice to be able to compare the two.

6/28 -- trains and a boat Dublin.

6/29 -- Just three words for you, 'Book of Kells'. There were other things done on this day including much exploring of the city and some very tasty fish and a Guinness. (It is very odd being in Ireland and being the only member of your party that likes beer much less stout.)

6/30 -- Some more museums and such and them Steve and I headed north to Howthe. Which is a little fishing village on the penninsula north of Dublin. There is a trail that winds along the cliffs around the penninsula. The sky was clear and the wind was warm. It was amazing! I think a hiking tour of Ireland is definitely in need of making.

7/1 -- Fly back to the States

That was the abridged version to say the least. I will try to get pictures up at some point soon.

Posting here seems like something that I put on the 'to do' list every morning and never seem to do. Of course my 'to do' lists lately have been rather static. (As in I would rather read/play/fidget than clean/organize/work) But yesterday was better than last week and today was better than yesterday. So things are looking up. I even started writing in my paper journal again today. I really want to start making that a habit. Its like going to the gym. I feel soo good after I've done it but actally making myself do it can be a challenge. Also I think it helps even out my brain and put things in perspective.

We are about 50% packed for our trip to the UK. London to Dublin and everywhere inbetween in 8 days. (ok not everywhere in between ) And I will finally get to see 'The Book of Kells' in person. Lets hope there's a good page showing next week. Actually getting quite excited, finally. (It says something about my recent moods that I 'forgot' to get excited about the trip until yesterday. Guess that means I do need a vacation/change of scenery. Unfortunately I couldn't get this week off too. Originally we wanted to be at Stonhenge for Solstice.) /sigh Maybe another year. btw....

HAPPY SOLSTICE!!

Well it is almost 2 here and I think I am about to degenerate into babbling.

ciao ciao

Hmmm...
Bored at work.
Tired and spacey.
Slacking like nobody's business
And missing good good friends who irritatingly enough choose to live in Kansas.

And these friends are? Larson and her wonderful husband. They got married this past Sunday and I had the pleasure of witnessing it. The ceremony was beautiful and 100% Jen. They are almost perfectly matched, and their differences balance each other.
